A Thankful Runner Gets Back in the Race
Christopher Whippen was always a runner. With the completion of his first half marathon in 2009, Christopher began racing and logging miles all over the northeast. However, over time he noticed a gradually increasing pain in the front of his hip. Despite two years of various consultations, therapy sessions, and treatments, Chris could barely walk. Luckily, he heard about HSS doctor Bryan Kelly through the writer Matt Long, one of his personal "running heroes." On his first visit to Dr. Kelly, Chris was diagnosed with a labral tear and scheduled for surgery. Christopher notes, "Dr. Kelly's office is a well-oiled machine and by far the best medical experience I have ever had. The surgery went smoothly, and Dr. Kelly's office staff supported me through every step of the recovery process." Today, eight months after his surgery, Christopher has returned to running. He says, "I can't thank God enough for the people at HSS... I feel that I got the best medical treatment available
and I couldn't be happier with the experience." With the support of our donors, HSS can continue to provide life-changing experiences to patients like Christopher.
No Pain, All Gain!
Mrs. Alta Gilbert donated to HSS out of appreciation for her doctor, Assistant Attending Orthopedic Surgeon, Friedrich Boettner, MD. "I love Dr. Boettner, and I want to do anything I can to help him and the Hospital. He's just incredible." Mrs. Gilbert came to Dr. Boettner for knee surgery and went home without any pain. Within just a few short weeks, Mrs. Gilbert was walking better than she had before her surgery. She notes, "When I tell my friends that I had no pain after my surgery, they are shocked. I had two knees done, and I had no pain at all!" Mrs. Gilbert believes in the mantra "Put your money where your mouth is," and that's why she made the decision to provide financial support to HSS. "I think Special Surgery is the best hospital in the world. I want to do whatever I can to help."
The Peter Jay Sharp Foundation Supports Lupus Research at HSS
In 2010, The Peter Jay Sharp Foundation pledged a $1.5 million challenge grant to establish The Peter Jay Sharp Chair in Lupus Research in honor of the late Peter Jay Sharp, a leading Manhattan real estate investor and a devoted philanthropist. The Chair is occupied by Dr. Alessandra Pernis, a Senior Scientist at Hospital for Special Surgery, enabling her to perform crucial research and mentor the future generation of scientists. Dr. Pernis’ research focuses on the common signaling pathways responsible for the development of lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. Her studies have provided a new understanding of how certain key proteins affect the production of pro-inflammatory molecules by T lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell, resulting in the inappropriate production of such molecules in an immune response. The Foundation’s generous gift enables research that promises to refine treatments and alleviate pain for patients living with lupus and related illnesses.
