The Critical Care Team

Stavros G. Memtsoudis, MD, PhD

A significant number of our patients present to our institution with a variety of pre-existing heart and lung problems that require intensive care beyond the operating room (e.g., ventilation).

To better serve the needs of these patients as well as other patients undergoing complex surgery, the Department of Anesthesiology has created a designated Critical Care Team of physicians. This Critical Care Team is composed of individual anesthesiologists that are specifically trained and/or board certified in Critical Care and who have extensive experience in the care of critically ill patients.

Our Critical Care Team is committed not only to the treatment of post-operative complications, but also to the implementation of therapeutic strategies to prevent such complications. The members of the Critical Care Team are continuously available for consultation.

The Critical Care Team physicians are highly involved in the care of patients with conditions such as myocardial infarction, respiratory failure, cardiac arrhythmias, and pulmonary embolism. The skills of these physicians allow them to perform specialized procedures such as transesophageal echocardiography, bronchoscopy, ventilator management, and placement of invasive monitoring lines. Their expert assessment of a patient’s condition enables them to involve specialty services in a timely manner to optimize the care of individual patients. Because of their comprehensive understanding of critical conditions, members of this team play an important role in the communication between individual physician services. Working closely with a variety of departments at HSS and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, our Critical Care Team physicians assure that the full range of state-of –the-art interventional therapies are available to our patients.

Depending on the specific problem requiring critical care attention, patients will either be treated in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (or Recovery Room) at HSS or transferred to an intensive care unit at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. It is our goal to keep patients and their families well-informed and to be available to answer questions during these often complex treatment decisions.
