Scope

This is a clinical study reviewing patients who have hip resurfacing at HSS, with special interest placed upon results compared by gender, age, and implant size. There will also be a sub-project examining the results of simultaneous bilateral hip resurfacing. A medical student can perform the chart and radiographic review during his/her fellowship since it is a retrospective study. The data to be extracted include: pain, walking tolerance, activity, and hip range of motion. The incidence of postoperative complications and hospital length of stay will be gathered from the hospital charts. Radiographs will be reviewed by the investigators for signs of loosening, heterotopic bone formation, and implant alignment.

There will also be the opportunity to query the existing registry data at HSS regarding hip resurfacing to examine demographic information, preoperative clinical scores, and the incidence of complications.

This study will allow a medical student to become familiar with the treatment of hip arthritis and to learn the difference between hip resurfacing and total hip replacement. Additionally, he/she will learn about the clinical and radiographic follow-up of these procedures. If the student is able to complete the data gathering portion of the study, he/she will be able to apply basic principles of statistical analysis.
