Handheld hip navigation provided real-time positioning data, decreased fluoroscopy time

Orthopedics Today—December 16, 2017

Orthopedics Today reported on research presented at the Current Concepts in Joint Replacement Winter Meeting.

Edwin P. Su, MD, discussed results with HipAlign involving imageless technology that includes sensors that create a reference plane and provide data on hip positioning intraoperatively.

"It offered the potential for accurate cup positioning during anterior total hip without x-ray," said Dr. Su who stressed the importance of being able to get real-time data.

Dr. Su and his colleagues prospectively studied the use of the system in 50 hips and found that there were no hardware failures and also didn't see any difference between the groups in mean inclination or abduction when looking at the position of the implanted cups.
