Tips for Managing Patellofemoral Arthritis

Dr. Fredrich Boettner, Orthopedic Surgeon, gives the top 5 tips for patients with patellofemoral arthritis. Patellofemoral arthritis is due to a loss of cartilage between the kneecap (patella) and the front part of the femur, called the “patello-femoral joint.”

1. Stretch the muscles in the front of your thigh, called the quadriceps. A flexible muscle will minimize the contact pressures in the patellofemoral joint.

2. Patellofemoral arthritis usually causes pain when climbing stairs, walking uphill or downhill. Avoiding these activities can reduce your pain.

3. Ideal training for patients with patellofemoral arthritis includes low-impact exercises, like using the elliptical runner or swimming.

4.  When you work on strength training, avoid bending your knee more than 20-30 degrees to minimize wear on the arthritic cartilage. Avoid heavy leg press exercises.

5. Have regular x-rays and visits with your doctor at least once a year. When the arthritis results in significant bone loss your doctor might need to recommend surgery earlier.
