LOCATION AND DATEHospital for Special Surgery, Richard L. Menschel Education Center, 2nd floor, 535 East 70th Street (between York and FDR Drive), New York City | October 20, 2012.
OVERVIEWNeurology is an evolving discipline designed to enhance patient health and well-being. New treatments and medications are constantly emerging. Clinical implementation of the new treatments is at times hampered because many practitioners have limited information on the potential advantages of using these new techniques and newly approved medications in emerging fields, such as neuromuscular disease (NMD), multiple sclerosis (MS) and Neurological Critical Care Units.
In addition, the practice of neurology is more highly regulated than many other specialties and the legislative process has a direct impact on patient care. It is important that practitioners have an understanding of relevant legislation and how they can participate as advocates for their patients. This course is designed to cover a full range of topics, such as neuromuscular diseases and neurological emergencies as well as provide updates on new treatment innovations and relevant legislation.
OBJECTIVESHSS activities are intended to improve the quality of patient care and safety. At the conclusion of the course, the participant should be able to:
- Identify new therapies and medications for neurological disease such as neuromuscular disease (NMD), multiple sclerosis and neurological emergencies and implement in their practice.
- Acquire greater insight into the legislative challenges that medical professionals (and neurologists in particular) are confronted with.
- Collaborate effectively as patient advocates and bring about changes in the legislative system via legislative advocacy groups, which can improve healthcare for neurologic patients.
