Current Concepts in Foot + Ankle
Sponsored by the Hospital for Special Surgery Office of Continuing Medical Education
TARGET AUDIENCE This activity is targeted to orthopaedists, specialty physicians in foot and ankle, medical students, residents and fellows.
LOCATION AND DATEHospital for Special Surgery, Richard L. Menschel Education Center, 535 East 70th Street (between York and FDR Drive), New York City | Friday, September 7, 2012.
STATEMENT OF NEEDThe foot and ankle is one of the most common sites for acute musculoskeletal injuries; for example, ankle sprains account for 75 percent of ankle injuries, and acute ankle trauma is responsible for 10 to 30 percent of sports-related injuries in young athletes (The Physician and Sports Medicine Journal, 1997).
Many physicians who treat foot and ankle injuries may not have a clear understanding of the role of arthroscopy and when it can be useful in procedures on joints of the foot and ankle, and may also be unfamiliar with new devices used in foot and ankle surgery, including Total Ankle Replacement (TAR). A cadaver component has been built into the course to provide physicians with a demonstration of Total Ankle and Subtalar Arthroscopy.
This activity provides a comprehensive review of the most up-to-date procedures, techniques and materials in the management of foot and ankle injuries from experienced surgeons in the field.
OBJECTIVESHSS activities are intended to improve the quality of patient care and safety. At the conclusion of this course participants will be able to:
- Identify patients who would most benefit from the use of various treatment options in foot and ankle surgery, such as arthroscopy, and be able to appropriately use these options in their practice.
- Explain the advantages and disadvantages of new treatments and techniques for various foot and ankle conditions, such as cavus foot, and be able to implement new techniques as appropriate.
- Discuss the indications for ankle replacements and be able to perform ankle replacement surgery.
ACCREDITATIONHospital for Special Surgery is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
