Becker's Hospital Review editorial team conducted research and examined several reputable hospital ranking sources, such as U.S. News & World Report, Healthgrades, Truven Health Analytics, The Leapfrog Group and Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. In examining each hospital, the editorial team considered questions such as "Would you take a loved one here for care? Would this hospital be on a short list of places to visit for an important procedure or health issue?"
