A-Rod to miss half of 2013 following hip surgery

New York Daily News—December 3, 2012

A-Rod will undergo surgery on his left hip to repair a labral tear, the same procedure he had on his right hip in March 2009.

The surgery will take place in January, as the doctor wants A-Rod to strengthen the hip before undergoing the operation. Dr. Bryan Kelly from Hospital for Special Surgery will perform the surgery.

Rodriguez – who had a labral tear in his right hip repaired in March 2009 – will undergo a left hip arthroscopy to repair a torn labrum, bone impingement and the correction of a cyst.

The surgery will take place in January, as the doctor wants A-Rod to strengthen the hip for 4-6 weeks before undergoing the operation.

A few weeks ago, A-Rod began feeling discomfort in his left hip, which another MRI revealed to be a labral tear.

A-Rod returned to the Yankees’ lineup two months after his 2009 hip surgery to repair a torn labrum, though the then-34-year-old had already been in spring training for a month at the time of that procedure.
