Hospital for Special Surgery Named Best in Orthopedics and Rheumatology in Northeast

New York, NY—July 1, 1999

Hospital for Special Surgery achieved the highest ranking in the northeastern United States in the categories of orthopedics and rheumatology in U.S.News & World Report’s latest "America’s Best Hospitals" publication. HSS was the only hospital in the New York metropolitan area to be listed in the top ten hospitals nationwide in these specialties.

Out of nearly 6,300 hospitals assessed throughout the United States, Hospital for Special Surgery was ranked second in the field of orthopedics, and third in rheumatology.

"America’s Best Hospitals," which hit the newsstands July 12, is a resource for consumers seeking the highest quality care in 16 medical specialties, according to U.S.News and World Report. Rankings were based on reputation and other medical information, such as the latest technology available to patients, nursing care and mortality rates.

Hospital for Special Surgery, founded in 1863, was the country’s first orthopedics and rheumatology hospital. World-renowned for its research in musculoskeletal disorders, the Hospital’s orthopedics residency program is among the most selective in the country. A number of professional athletes are among the hospital’s patients, with HSS physicians designated team doctors for the New York Giants and New York Mets, and for the U.S. Davis Cup Tennis Team.

The Hospital opened the first Osteoporosis Prevention and Women’s Sports Medicine Centers in the country. Other special services include the Barbara Volcker Center for Women and Rheumatic Disease and a pediatric outreach program.
