New York Post's Doree Lewak reports on the new trend of young kids training in mixed martial arts. She reports that one gym in Long Island saw kiddie enrollment triple over the last year. According to a 2011 ESPN report, about 3.2 million youngsters under the age of 13 practice the sport.
"Many of these MMA gyms have the ethos of teaching kids respect and fitness, and the fighting isn't the primary thrust," said Peter D. Fabricant, MD, pediatric orthopedic surgeon at HSS.
"Every sport has risk, and every sport has different risk," said Dr. Fabricant who sees mostly shoulder dislocations from grappling or the occasional ankle or knee injury from MMA.
