NBC Nightly News—September 14, 2017
NBC Nightly News reported that celebrity Selena Gomez recently had a kidney transplant due to complications from lupus. HSS rheumatologist Jane E. Salmon, MD, who did not treat Gomez, was featured in the segment explaining common symptoms of lupus and how it could lead to kidney failure.
"When lupus attacks your kidney, it starts to kill your kidney cells and ultimately your entire kidney will stop working," Dr. Salmon said.
Dr. Salmon noted that the anti-rejection drugs for her new kidney should protect the transplant.
According to Dr. Salmon, "you can live with lupus, you can have kids with lupus, you can be happy with lupus."
