Osi Has Knee Surgery; Could Miss Six Weeks

New York Daily News—August 19, 2011

Osi Umenyiora underwent surgery on his trouble right knee this morning, just eight days after a specialist agreed with the Giants doctors that he wouldn’t need surgery right away. The surgery could end up keeping the two-time Pro Bowler out until October.

Giants GM Jerry Reese said in a statement that on Thursday, the Giants’ off day, Umenyiora called him “to let me know that he wanted to have the surgery now.”

According to Giants trainer Ronnie Barnes, the surgery is "a simple debridement,” which is essentially a removal of scar or frayed tissue from around the old injury. The surgery was being performed by Dr. Russell Warren, the Giants' team physician, at Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.
