Organic Life featured the physical and mental benefits of fly fishing as a sport. According to the article, nearly 65 percent of people who fish do it for the workout. At times, those fishing have to maintain balance and coordination while standing on an uneven surface. Alice Chen, MD, physiatrist at HSS, said "From mechanical standpoint, it requires you to use some of those smaller muscles on your abdominal walls and back."
In addition, Dr. Chen noted there are emotional benefits to exercising outdoors. "There’s more benefit to doing physical activity with a purpose as opposed to walking on treadmill. And exercising out in nature has its benefits because it has the emotional component to it. You might get a better endorphin kick," she said.
