The National—July 2, 2017
The National featured HSS sports medicine surgeon Danyal H. Nawabi, MD, FRCS in an article about his international journey to become an orthopedic surgeon, his area of focus and his future goals of providing care to the UAE.
Originally from Dubai, Dr. Nawabi moved to the UK to study sports medicine. His mentor Andy Williams, a leading British surgeon, encouraged Dr. Nawabi to pick a fellowship at HSS. After starting at HSS, Dr. Nawabi said "I was blown away by the attention to detail in every single thing that was being done here — be it talking to the patient, transferring the patient to the operating room, setting them up on a table, closing the skin. Everything had to be perfect."
During his time in New York, Dr. Nawabi learned how to conduct hip arthroscopies from the sports medicine team, and has authored more than 50 peer reviewed research papers using data culled from tracking thousands of patients as they recover from surgery.
According to the article, Dr. Nawabi would like to eventually return to the UAE to build a world class sports medicine centre or orthopedics clinic in Dubai. "My whole journey has been inspired by what’s happening in my country along the way. I hear about the big leaps and bounds they are making, and I want to do the same thing to make them proud."
