The Relentless Focus of Hospital for Special Surgery

In the 'Best Hospitals' edition of U.S. News & World Report, staff writer Michael Morella features six Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) patients and their physicians to emphasize the quality of care - from complex surgeries to everyday procedures - provided at the hospital. During a week-long visit, Michael interviewed the following patients and their physicians:

• Lea Medina, a patient of Roger F. Widmann, MD, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at HSS, came to the hospital for a selective thoracic fusion to correct scoliosis in her spine.

• Alex Douglass, a Pennsylvania State Trooper, received care from David S. Wellman, MD, an orthopedic trauma surgeon at HSS; David J. Mayman, MD, a hip and knee surgeon at HSS; and Joseph H. Feinberg, MD, a physiatrist at HSS, after sustaining a hip and pelvic injury from a gunshot.

• Jessica Markus is a patient of Joseph A. Markenson, MD, a rheumatologist at HSS. Dr. Markenson introduced a new treatment regimen to Jessica, which helped get her lupus symptoms under control.

• Stephon Gilmore, a cornerback for the Buffalo Bills, receives care from Frank A. Cordasco, MD, a sports medicine surgeon at HSS, for a shoulder fracture and dislocation that occurred during a game against the Houston Texans.

• Susan Perry, who was born with congenital hip dysplasia, is a patient of Seth A. Jerabek, MD, a hip and knee surgeon at HSS, and Austin T. Fragomen, MD, a limb lengthening surgeon at HSS. Susan underwent a hip replacement with Dr. Jerabek and is now considering different limb lengthening procedures with Dr. Fragomen.

• Heather Miller, a patient of Riley J. Williams, MD, a sports medicine surgeon at HSS, receives care from Snehal Patel, PT, a clinical supervisor at HSS Sports Rehab, while recovering from knee surgery following an ACL tear.
