Preceptoring and Student Clinical Rotations

Thank you for your interest in partnering with Hospital for Special Surgery’s Center for Advanced Practice Nursing for your student clinical rotation(s).

Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) spend a significant amount of time in graduate school studying and acquiring knowledge in a classroom-based setting. Exposure and structured training to the day-to-day clinical practice of experienced APPs and physicians are also integral to translating medical knowledge and understanding into effective patient care. During clinical rotations at HSS, NP students will further learn how to:

  • provide compassionate, appropriate care for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health
  • apply knowledge about established and evolving biomedical, clinical, epidemiological and social behavior sciences
  • investigate and evaluate patient care practices; appraise and assimilate scientific evidence to continuously improve patient care
  • effectively communicate and collaborate with patients, their families, and health professionals
  • carry out professional responsibilities and adhere to ethical principles
  • be aware of and responsive to the larger context and system of healthcare; effectively call on other resources in the system to provide optimal healthcare

Given the unique, specialized environment of HSS, there are limited opportunities to offer NP students an optimal rotation that encompasses a full, broad scope of practice important for generalized training in the adult, pediatric, family, or acute care NP tracks; HSS NPs are often utilized in very specialized and subspecialized roles.

Traditional, best fit specialties at HSS for NP students include intensive care (PACU/OSCU/SDU) and pediatric orthopedics (aligning with acute care and pediatric tracks, respectively).  HSS also offers a specialty rotation option where students would partner with three (3) different preceptors in three (3) different specialty areas for 3-5 weeks each.  Specialties include Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement (ARJR), Anticoagulation, Cardiology, Diabetes Care, Intensive Care, Metabolic Bone, Occupational Health, Pain Management, Pediatric Orthopedics, Post-Operative Care, Radiology, Spine, Trauma, Wound Care, and Other (private physician and surgeon offices).

As of the spring of 2017, HSS maintains standing contracts for student clinical rotations with the following institutions and their graduate nursing programs:

NP Immersion (HSS RNs only)

Exclusive to HSS RNs, the Center for Advanced Practice Nursing offers a structured immersion experience to nurses interested in learning more about the role and responsibilities of NPs. Accepted applicants will undergo three (3) day-long immersions with HSS NPs in three (3) different specialty areas. Applications are reviewed bi-annually (every six months); if selected, staff may use their continuing education benefits.

Inquire with Nursing Professional Development or the Center for Advanced Practice Nursing for additional information.

NP Careers

With over 50 NPs practicing in more than a dozen specialty and subspecialty areas, in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, new graduates and experienced NPs alike are encouraged to explore full-time, part-time, and per diem opportunities at HSS Careers for Nurse Practitioners.
