Keep in mind that if the orthopedic surgeon does recommend surgery and you put it off, that could cause more problems.
That's especially true if your spinal cord is being compressed by a degenerative condition, said Frederico P. Girardi, MD, spine surgeon at HSS. "Your spinal cord is made of nerves, and they need oxygen and nutrients in order to function."
