Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith reportedly tore both his ACL and MCL in his left knee and required reconstructive surgery. A reporter from South Bend Tribune talks to Moira McCarthy, MD, sports medicine surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery, for her medical expertise on these types of tears.
Even though two ligaments were damaged, recovery time shouldn't be longer than usual. "The ACL really takes priority in returning," Dr. McCarthy said. "The MCL is going to be treated at the same time, so it's really not going to add much (recovery time) to it."
As for a full recovery, "everybody is a little bit different, and it totally depends on how much he trusts the knee going forward," Dr. McCarthy said.
