Grandparents.com editor-in-chief Ellen Breslau provides seven surprising everyday causes of back pain.
According to Vijay B. Vad, MD, a physiatrist at Hospital for Special Surgery, "Smoking has been shown to decrease blood supply to the discs in the back, causing premature aging of discs." Dr. Vad also attributes the following to back pain: sitting for long periods of time, stress, flying on a plane, consuming sugar, and type of mattress.
