Dr. Nicholas Beatty is a double board certified physiatrist at HSS specializing in physiatric sports medicine, interventional spine care, and musculoskeletal conditions. His medical practice focuses on evidence-based treatments for muscle, tendon, joint, and spine conditions. Dr. Beatty's goal is to promote and support an active lifestyle through early and accurate diagnosis of musculoskeletal injuries or dysfunction, evidence-informed conservative treatment options whenever possible, and supporting rapid but safe return to sport or activity.
As a physiatrist, Dr. Beatty's knowledge and training spans musculoskeletal medicine, rehabilitation, orthopedic and neurologic conditions, nerve conditions and nerve testing (EMG), traumatic brain injury (TBI), spinal cord injury (SCI), and neurodegenerative conditions. His skillset, training, and expertise are aligned in addressing orthopedic conditions, back pain, sports injuries, nerve conditions, arthritis, and tendon/ligament conditions.
As a sports medicine physiatrist and certified musculoskeletal sonographer (RMSK), Dr. Beatty uses ultrasound and advanced imaging techniques to confirm findings from his specialized history and physical exam. Personalized exercises and physical therapy are often used in conjunction with targeted ultrasound-guided and fluoroscopy-guided injections to the site of injury (joint/cartilage, muscle/tendon/ligament, and the spine) to promote healing and restore function. Regenerative, restorative, and proliferative orthobiologic treatments are considered when suitable, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP), bone-marrow-derived injections, hyaluronic acid viscosupplementation, percutaneous needle tenotomy, hydrodissection, and other ultrasound-guided procedures.
Dr. Beatty also utilizes targeted spinal injections to treat nerve, disc, and joint dysfunction including epidural injections, facet joint injections, radiofrequency denervation, and other disc-related treatments.

Dr. Beatty's practice is an academic practice at Hospital for Special Surgery. This means that he often trains and teaches residents and fellows (post-medical school licensed physicians). Your care will be provided by his team which, in his opinion, improves the quality of your care. Integrating teaching and research into a practice leads to better evidence-informed outcomes but does take time. This may increase the time needed at each visit. For new patients, this may increase the time you should expect to be here for your initial visit. Please let us know if you have any questions about resident/fellow physician roles in your exam. If you would prefer a different type of practice or physician, please let us know and we will do our best to direct you to another physician.

Dr. Beatty's research experience lies in clinical investigation of musculoskeletal conditions of the spine and extremities, such as degenerative disc disease and joint osteoarthritis, and regenerative/restorative medicine treatments including bone-marrow aspirate treatments, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), hyaluronic acid viscosupplementation, and steroid injections. Dr. Beatty is also interested in ways to improve the accuracy and efficacy of muscle, tendon, and joint treatments and has investigated the role of ultrasound in treating osteoarthritis. In addition to painful orthopedic conditions, Dr. Beatty has an interest in athletic performance and soccer/football medicine in particular. Additional interests include longitudinal injury profiles in combat athletes (mixed martial artists, boxers, and other competitors), and orthobiologic outcomes.
