Dr. Mark Drakos is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in disorders of the foot and ankle as well as sports medicine injuries. He is a Team Orthopedist for the New York Knicks and the New York Mets as well as a consultant to many professional sports teams. At HSS, Dr. Drakos is medical director for the HSS Long Island location as well as the fellowship director for the Foot and Ankle Service. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery and has a subspecialty board certification in sports medicine.
Dr. Drakos did his undergraduate work in biomedical engineering at Harvard University where he was also a four-year letter winner and wide receiver for the varsity football team. He received his medical degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook where he was elected a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society signifying graduation within the top 15% of his class.
Dr. Drakos completed his orthopedic training at HSS in New York which has been named the #1 hospital in the United States for orthopedics by U.S. News and World Report since 2010. Here he received over $500,000 in grants for his research as well as the Jean McDaniel Award for the chief resident who best exemplifies professional skill, dedication to the ethics of medicine and commitment to resident education. He also received the Lewis Clark Wagner Award for excellence in orthopedic surgery research. Following residency, he did a sports medicine fellowship at HSS where he was an assistant team physician for the New York Giants. He followed that with a second fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at Brown University, one of the busiest trauma centers in the Northeast.
Dr. Drakos is the author of over 100 peer review articles, book chapters and presentations involving orthopedics. He is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS), the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA).
