About Dr. Jaramillo

Dr. Diego Jaramillo is a board certified radiologist and Director of Pediatric Imaging at HSS. He has been the principal investigator of 3 major NIH grants and authored over 270 publications. His research focuses on imaging of growth disorders in children, and he has NIH R01 funding for the study "Understanding Skeletal Growth Using Diffusion Tensor Imaging of the Physis and Metaphysis".

Prior to joining HSS, Dr. Jaramillo had been the President and Board Chair of the Society for Pediatric Radiology, Radiologist-in-Chief at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and Interim Chair of Radiology at Columbia University Medical Center. He has been involved with medical education and mentorship at the undergraduate and graduate levels for many years.

Research

Dr. Jaramillo's research is centered on "Understanding Skeletal Growth using Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) of the Physis and Metaphysis (5R01HD104720-03), using a technique he helped pioneered. He seeks to clarify the dynamics of growth during the growth spurt and subsequent physeal closure, by establishing predictors of height velocity and final height and to evaluate response to growth hormone before it is apparent clinically. DTI metrics increase during fastest growth and decrease with growth failure.

His grant prior work on "Early Diagnosis of Growth Disorders using MRI" clarified the MRI characteristics of the normal and injured physis by correlating imaging with histology in animal models of direct and indirect insults to the physis, and resulted in the development of diffusion and perfusion MR imaging for evaluation of epiphyseal ischemia and its secondary physeal damage. Recently, his research has also focused on using AI tools to create standards for the prediction of tibial and femoral length, and AI for evaluation of pediatric upper extremity fractures.
