HSS Sports Medicine Research is committed to furthering our understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of sports related injuries like rotator cuff tears and ACL injuries. Our focus in the lab and with patients in clinical trials is to both improve and personalize care to the individual, while looking for opportunities for injury prevention. This is accomplished through a multidisciplinary approach that includes the world's thought leaders on musculoskeletal health and science.
Basic Science and Soft Tissue Biology - investigates basic cellular and molecular mechanisms of soft tissue healing to improve the treatment of ligament, tendon, and cartilage injuries. Musculoskeletal Bioengineering and Biomechanics - uses computer modeling and engineering to better understand the specific needs of each patient to customize surgeries for sport and shoulder injuries. Rehabilitation and Performance - advances our understanding of how movement affects musculoskeletal pathologies and generates knowledge that can be used to improve outcomes in rehabilitation and performance.
Our clinical trials and research studies range from small pilot studies to Phase III multinational clinical trials. Our experience covers all phases from feasibility studies to late-phase trials. In addition, our registries and outcomes research focus on improving outcomes following total shoulder replacement, rotator cuff repair, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, cartilage regeneration, and hip preservation procedures. We currently maintain a registry that enrolls over 6000 patients annually to achieve these goals.
