Diversity and Inclusion in Sports Medicine
In 2022, the hospital launched the Summer Premedical Internship program as a part of the HSS Diversity in Orthopedics Initiative. The inaugural program from the Sports Medicine Institute hosted 3 interns from Howard. Ultimately the hospital was able to secure a five-year commitment of $1 million dollars from the Gray Foundation to continue to support the mission and focus of increasing diversity among orthopedic physicians and surgeons by addressing disparity in education and mentorship.
Thanks to the generosity of the Gray Foundation, the support of Andrew Pearle, MD, Answorth Allen, MD, Daphne Scott, MD (Chief Medical Diversity Officer), and the SMI, the hospital welcomed five undergraduates from underrepresented backgrounds to HSS to participate in its 2nd Summer Premedical Internship during the months of June and July. In addition to providers from the SMI, the interns had the added privilege of learning from HSS surgeons and physicians in the Departments of Foot and Ankle, Hand, Spine, and Physiatry.
