Patient Surgeon: S. Robert Rozbruch
Daniel is a 37 year-old who was in a MVA. He suffered an open knee fracture and dislocation, and the knee became infected. He had stiffness, deformity and shortening of the leg. He was in terrible pain and could not walk. There was drainage from the knee. He had osteomyelitis and septic arthritis of the knee with bone loss and deformity.
He was not a good replacement for joint replacement because of his age and severe infection. We debrided the infected bone, cleared the infection, performed an arthrodesis of the knee and simultaneously lengthened the tibia 4 cm using an Ilizarov frame.
