Spinal Tumors

HSS is the #1 orthopedic hospital in the world and a national leader in rheumatology. This content was created by our physicians and experts.

Tumors that can be either cancerous (malignant) or noncancerous (benign) may occur within the spinal cord or vertebrae. Cancerous tumors include those caused by osteosarcoma or metastatic bone disease. Regardless of whether a patient has a cancerous or benign bone tumor, it can cause pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, resulting in pain and potential disability. Several surgical options are available, including decompression surgery.
