HSS Nursing - Our Role in Your Career Development

Our Role in Your Development

As a global leader in orthopedics and rheumatology, our Magnet nurses help put our patients on the road to recovery every day. We’re proud of everything we’ve achieved, but we’re also never satisfied with standing still. Our world is constantly changing as we break new medical ground – that’s why we offer our remarkable nursing team the comprehensive training and development programs they need to stay ahead. When you join HSS, you’ll be given the resources and encouragement you’ll need to develop your skill set, so you can take the best possible care of the patients we serve.

HSS Nursing - Your Career Ladder

Your Career Ladder

Providing our extraordinary Magnet nurses with clear direction and the opportunity to advance their careers is essential to our success. We collaborate closely and share our expertise, ensuring that we’re continually improving as individuals and as an organization. And to help achieve this, we’ve developed a clinical ladder designed to provide nurses with a structured pathway that encourages their development, builds their knowledge and enables them to grow personally and professionally.

Clinical Nurse I (CN I) is the entry level for all newly hired or experienced registered professional nurses. Here, you will learn how to treat patients of all different age groups appropriately and with the highest level of care that’s expected from us. The Clinical Nurse II role requires at least three years experience, a BSN Degree, and national certification in their area of practice. At this point you’ll begin mentoring nurses with less experience, so natural leadership skills and compassion are vital. Finally, the Clinical Nurse III leads and coordinates the unit, while ensuring the continued growth and development of staff within all Clinical Nurse levels.

No matter what level you’re in, you’ll benefit from the support and training you’ll need to operate at your best. Every member of the HSS family plays an important part in what we do. If you join HSS, you will be sure to find the tools and support you need to successfully contribute.

HSS Nursing - Our Residency Programs

Our Residency Programs

Here at HSS, we need the fresh perspectives and new ideas that our Nurse Residents can offer in helping our patients get back in the game. Our Nursing Residency Programs provide the opportunity for new nurses to grow in an environment where help is given willingly, collaboration is instinctive, and peers support your success.

HSS has three Nurse Residency Programs:

The Perioperative Program

The Perioperative Program is a 12-month program. Nurse Residents rotate through different orthopedic services such as Total Arthroplasty, Spine, Sports, Trauma/Limb Lengthening, as well as Hand and Foot. The cohort meets on a weekly basis during their clinical orientation, which allows for review of clinical competencies with a clinical education specialist. As clinical competencies improve, the meetings are less frequent and eventually transition into a monthly schedule of mentoring by the education team. The Perioperative Program accepts applications from both experienced and new graduate RNs.

Requirements:

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited BSN program
  • Must be in possession of a current New York State RN license by program start date
  • Must commit to the one-year Residency Program

The Inpatient and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)/Step Down Unit (SDU) Programs

The Inpatient and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)/Step Down Unit (SDU) Residency Programs are exclusive to new graduates. These RNs have no experience in a hospital setting. Cohorts are hired and on-boarded to their respective unit at the same time. The group is initially together throughout the orientation process, which is one year from date of hire. The Inpatient Residency Program provides for 16 weeks of clinical orientation. The PACU/SDU Residency Program allows for 24 clinical weeks.

The programs are divided into three time frames: 1) general orientation, 2) clinical orientation, and 3) mentoring. The general orientation process is comprised of classroom/didactic learning. The clinical orientation allows new graduates to shadow nurses during their practice in different settings. During this time, residents meet with other members of the interdisciplinary team. They will also shadow other disciplines to become familiar with respective roles and learn how to interact with colleagues in everyday practice. They can become familiar with resources in the practice environment and observe the experiences of their patients.

The clinical orientation process is then closely followed by a clinical education specialist and is very focused with weekly objectives and skills. Weekly individual meetings with the new graduate, preceptor, clinical education specialists and patient care directors serve to measure effective transition.

During the mentoring phase (month 2) of the orientation process, the residency programs have monthly scheduled meetings with the cohorts, who meet together to share experiences, and discuss progress to date as a group. This continues monthly for a period of six months. After the initial six months, the meetings alternate on a monthly basis. Providing effective progress and meetings in a supportive environment will allow new graduates to gain confidence in their abilities to cope with the day-to-day demands of nursing.

Requirements:

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited BSN program
  • Must be in possession of a current New York State RN license by program start date
  • Must commit to the one-year residency program
  • Must be the first paid hospital-based licensed RN position
