Primary Sports Medicine Service

Nonsurgical treatment for the active individual

The Primary Sports Medicine Service is comprised of a group of physicians trained in sports medicine who practice nonsurgical musculoskeletal care. Our team can help patients determine whether their condition requires surgery or can be managed by other types of treatment.

Any patient with a musculoskeletal injury or sports-related illness is welcome. From young children to active retirees, our specialists treat a variety of musculoskeletal ailments including strains, sprains, tendinitis, fractures, sports concussions, and arthritis, as well as medical problems unique to the female athlete, runner, cyclist, swimmer, and a variety of other sports enthusiasts.

Each physician in the Primary Sports Medicine Service originally started in primary care - family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine - before going on to further training in sports medicine. All are active members in the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, the national organization for Primary Care Sports Medicine.

What we Treat

The Primary Sports Medicine Service provides world-class care for a variety of patients looking to maintain active lifestyles. These include athletes of all ages and types including professional and recreational athletes, female athletes, and high school and youth league athletes.

Common conditions seen by our physicians include pain or dysfunction in the following areas:

  • Neck
  • Shoulder
  • Elbow
  • Wrist and hand
  • Back
  • Hip
  • Knee
  • Leg
  • Ankle and foot

Most injuries do not require surgery.

The goal of the Primary Sports Medicine Service is to help patients decrease their pain and improve function so they can safely get back to their activities. The physicians will assist patients in determining the best treatment plan, and can refer the patients if surgery is indicated.

We take a comprehensive approach to our patients, focusing not only on the injury itself but also on the factors that may contribute to their recovery process. These factors are all considered when a treatment plan is formed. We specialize in employing nonsurgical treatment methods for musculoskeletal issues. These include:

  • Education
  • Exercise programs
  • Physical therapy
  • Short-term medications
  • Bracing

The Primary Sports Medicine Service includes a partnership with the Sports Medicine surgical team at HSS. This partnership illustrates the whole spectrum of treatment options that HSS has to offer, from nonsurgical treatment to surgery, as well as subsequent rehab and recovery.

Why choose HSS? Our patients say it best.
